Federal prosecutors say television actress Allison Mack, from "Smallville" has been charged with sex trafficking for helping recruit women to be slaves of a man who sold himself as a self-improvement guru.
Actress Allison Mack was arrested in connection to the alleged cult NXIVM on Friday.
Arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Brooklyn, the 35-year-old actor forced women to have sex with Raniere under threat of having damaging information about them released.
"Today we announce an additional arrest, and an indictment, in a case that brought to light an inconceivable crime", stated FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge Sweeney.More news: Analysts Watch-List Stock: The Coca-Cola Company (KO)
"The accusations that I was in the "inner circle" or recruited women as "sex slaves" are blatantly false", Kreuk said. New members were also restrained and forced to say "Master, please brand me, it would be an honor", before a symbol was cauterized into each woman's skin just below her hip. The 35-year-old was last seen last month chasing after Keith Raniere, the cult leader, as law enforcement arrested him and took him away from the $10,000 a week villa in Mexico they had been hiding out at.
Raniere has called NXIVM a self-help group, but investigators allege it was a multi-level marketing scheme used as a ruse to enslave and traffic women for sex. The indictment against Mack and Raniere accuses them both of conspiring to recruit women to an organization within NXIVM known as DOS.
In March, federal authorities raided an upstate NY residence near Albany where NXIVM was headquartered.
Frank Parlato, who's written extensively about NXIVM based on interviews with former members for The Frank Report, says DOS works on a master-slave hierarchy with Raniere at the top followed by Mack.More news: Germany and France plot eurozone reform
Raniere, 57, who lived outside Albany, received financing for his twisted operation from Clare Bronfman, an heir to the Seagram's liquor fortune, according to authorities.
Raniere, 57, was arrested in Mexico, brought to the USA on March 26 and is being held without bail in Brooklyn.
Fellow Smallville castmate Kristin Kreuk broke her silence on her involvement in the women-only group in March in a Twitter post. "During the branding ceremonies, slaves were required to be fully naked, and a master would order one slave to film the branded while the others restrained the slave being branded". Mack allegedly ordered the slaves to engage in sexual intercourse with Raniere.More news: Puerto Rico Endures Country-Wide Blackout
