Turkey's Erzurum applies to host 2026 Winter Olympics

"I warmly welcome the NOCs´ and cities´ interest in hosting the Olympic Winter Games", said IOC president Thomas Bach.

"This partnership is an exciting step towards determining if a bid for the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games is right for Calgary", said Naheed Nenshi, mayor of Calgary, last week.

Austria's Graz, Swedish capital Stockholm, Sion in Switzerland, Turkey's Erzurum, Japan's Sapporo and a joint bid from Italy's Cortina d'Ampezzo, Milan and Turin are also in the initial process. The IOC has turned the page with regard to Olympic candidatures.

Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Games and Sapporo staged the 1972 event, while Cortina organized the 1956 Winter Olympics.

The Executive Board will then recommend which cities to invite to bid, and the IOC Session will vote to approve the list.

In addition to the seven countries eyeing up 2026, the IOC today said other nations had come forward to express interest in the 2030 Games "and beyond", including the U.S. Olympic Committee, which is sizing up a push for the Winter Olympics once LA 2028 is out of the way.

'The discussions will focus on the further development of sport in the DPRK after the successful participation of athletes at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018; and the preparation of athletes from. the DPRK with the objective of qualifying for and participating in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, as well as the Youth Olympic Games 2020 and 2022, ' the IOC added. Labeled "The New Norm", it's a set of 118 reforms created to slash Games delivery costs for candidate cities.

Dubi told GamesBids.com during a conference call Tuesday "what we expect from the USOC is to open the door to discuss this [interest] with the International Olympic Committee and those cities interested because what is really important for them will be at some point to make a choice that is probably to open a bid within the United States". Salt Lake City, Denver and Reno-Tahoe are possible contenders.
