Nipah virus: Oman embassy issues warning for citizens travelling to India

They have denied rumours that the bats may spread the infection. Its hard to manage social media groups who spread misinformation, a senior government official told INDIA TODAY.

Over 15 bats were found dead in Nahan town in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur District, triggering fears that it could have been due to the deadly Nipah Virus, which has killed around 12 people in Kerala.

Eight of the 11 deaths were reported from Kozhikode and three from Malappuram.

Doctors would be asked to send samples of such patients to the state-run Goa Medical College and Hospital, which would then send it to the Pune-based National Institute of Virology for testing, he said.

Meanwhile, the Kerala Cabinet on Tuesday approved a draft to bear all the medical expenses of the diseased and also announced Rs 20 lakh compensation for to the kin of Lini Puthussery, a nurse who died while treating persons infected by Nipah virus.

"They are all contacts of the confirmed cases and their lab results are awaited".

Mr Choubey said hospitals in public and private sectors have been provided with personal protective equipment and appropriate steps to contain this virus have been taken.

The PMC would be the referral centre for Nipah virus infection.

On Wednesday, state health department issued advisory to health officials for early detection and isolation of NiV suspects. Facilities for ensuring individual safety would be made available in all hospitals. A central team has also been sent to the district to help the state administration.

"In the Bangladesh and India outbreaks, consumption of fruits or fruit products (e.g. raw date palm juice) contaminated with urine or saliva from infected fruit bats was the most likely source of infection", the World Health Organization explains.

But this is not the first outbreak of Nipah virus in India. Pigs served as an intermediate host during this outbreak.

Currently, there is no vaccine or drug for treatment of the NiV infection. Treatment is focused on managing fever and the neurological symptoms. Some people can also experience atypical pneumonia and severe respiratory problems, including acute respiratory distress.

A patient suffering from acute Nipah virus can fall into coma within 48 hours.
