The ejection came with Detroit catcher James McCann batting. The next hitter, Jean Segura, blasted a bases-loaded single up the middle past a diving Iglesias. Seattle tied it in the fourth on Dee Gordon's RBI single.

He was attended to by a trainer and left the game, replaced in the lineup by Andrew Romine.

In the opener, Jose Iglesias hit a two-run homer and former Oregon State pitcher Matthew Boyd (2-3) allowed three hits and three runs while striking out six and walking three in six innings for the win. Grayson Greiner followed with a single to right, and Jones scored on a very close play at the plate.

Tigers: Castellanos was hit by a pitch in the first inning of the nightcap. He remained in the game in right field for the top of the second inning before being pinch-hit for by Victor Reyes in the bottom of the frame. The Mariners have the offensive edge in this one and they have a big edge on the mound with Paxton over Hardy, who is making his first Major League Baseball start after 167 games out of the pen in his career. He has yet to face the Tigers this year and did not record a start against them in 2017, either.
