After Fallout 76 was teased a few weeks ago, people knew that it would be showcased heavily at Bethesda's E3 conference. From what we have seen from the gameplay shown, this will be a true Fallout experience with the added pleasure of online co-op. At its own press conference, Bethesda revealed that Fallout 76 will be an online multiplayer affair that you can enjoy on your own or in co-op mode with others. You won't be playing with thousands of others. Once you've agreed on a target with your comrades you can grab rare resources from the blast site, if you're kitted out to survive the fallout.
In terms of how online will work, you won't be playing in the same world with every other Fallout: 76 player in the world, because that would be insane. Judging by the footage we've seen a lot of the defensive items and building tools from Fallout 4 will be coming back in Fallout 76.

Bethesda wants players to be able to create their own stories, with it boasting a wide open-world in which "you will decide the heroes, and you will decide the villains".
If you buy the game with a disc, you'll be able to sell it to a retailer like GameStop for credit toward another game once you start getting bored with Fallout 76's world.
