Fashion Designer Kate Spade Dead at 55

She was pronounced dead on the scene when found at her NY apartment on 5 June.

According to law enforcement officials, housekeeping staff found her dead in her apartment around 10:20 what seems to be a suicide by hanging.

Kate is survived by her husband, Andy, and her 13-year-old daughter, Frances. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The NYPD confirmed that she was found unconscious and unresponsive due to an apparent suicide.

Tapestry Inc, the handbag company formerly known as Coach, eventually bought the Kate Spade brand in May 2017 to tap millennials, who are drawn to the company's quirky satchels and colorful tote bags.

Kate Spade New York has more than 140 retail shops around the US, and more than 175 elsewhere in the world.

Her brand, Kate Spade New York, has hundreds of stores around the world.

Shortly after learning of Kate's suicide on Tuesday, Cole offered up his thoughts in a cryptic tweet, which many found insensitive.

Spade was born December 24, 1962 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Ms Spade took time off from the fashion industry, but launched a new brand called Frances Valentine in 2016, offering a line of luxury handbags and shoes.

"I don't think you need to neglect the style of something that's functional", the designer told Time magazine in 2005.

Kate Spade New York issued a statement confirming the "incredibly sad news" of its founder's death. Together, Kate and Andy launched Kate Spade Handbags in 1993.
