While the debate over whether it's worth getting two Joker movies, let alone one, will rumble on, it appears that DC are finally going all-in on Jared Leto's Joker after a tepid reaction to his debut.
Per Variety, it looks like we won't be starving for Joker movies anytime soon as Jared Leto's Joker will now receive his own standalone feature that is wholly unconnected from the Todd Phillips-directed origin feature that was announced a year ago.More news: Breakthrough with new prostate cancer immune system drug
No plot details have been announced yet, but Jared Leto has also signed on to be an executive producer for the movie, which could be... interesting.
Leto previously expressed confusion about the announcement but noted playing a famous character like The Joker lends itself to multiple interpretations.More news: MyHeritage DNA testing service says breach affected 92M users' data
According to a report by Variety, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are firmly moving forward on a Jared Leto-starring Joker standalone movie. Update: Deadline says the Phillips Joker movie is still in the works. This means that the critically maligned "Suicide Squad" will now have roughly three spinoffs in addition to a planned "Wonder Woman" sequel, an "Aquaman" standalone film, a "Suicide Squad" sequel and the upcoming introduction of "Shazam". Leto pretty much had a cameo in the film and was rarely seen.
There has been no update on Ben Affleck's solo Batman movie, to be directed by Matt Reeves. Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly in talks star as the iconic comic book villain in that incarnation, but the studio has always been clear that those plans didn't signal the end for Leto's Joker.
