In late June, several news outlets reported that Jackson was suffering from terminal cancer.

He and Katherine had 10 children; nine survived to have recording careers starting with the Jackson 5, who became instant global pop sensations when they burst on the scene.

By the mid-'60s, the quintet of Michael, Jermaine, Tito, Marlon and Jackie Jackson was a popular local attraction in their hometown of Gary, IN. But Paris Jackson, who is Michael Jackson's daughter, later alleged that someone else posted that from her grandfather's account.

Jackson helmed a family of iconic American entertainers, launching them to stratospheric heights of stardom, but his legacy was marred by repeated charges of abuse that strained and ended his relationships with the children he raised in the spotlight.

Joe Jackson, the father of The Jackson 5 family, has died. "No one knew what was going on", said Jackson.

Just this past weekend, Janet Jackson hailed her father during an acceptance speech at a Radio Disney awards ceremony.

In 1979, Michael broke from the group - as well as his father's management - and went to even greater acclaim with the landmark albums "Off the Wall" and "Thriller".

Joe agreed to it but, far from apologising, he said his methods made his kids successful and kept them out of jail.

As the group grew into worldwide sensations and Michael Jackson left to pursue his hugely successful solo career, more scrutiny was placed on Jackson. Michael, who died in 2009 at age 50 of a drug overdose, told interviewer Oprah Winfrey that he was so afraid of his father that he would sometimes vomit when he saw him. "Yeah, I whipped my kids and back then there was nothing wrong with that", he said.

Joseph Walter Jackson was born the eldest of five children to Crystal Lee and Samuel Jackson, a schoolteacher, in Fountain Hill, Arkansas, on July 26, 1928.

Jackson nurtured ambitions of being a boxer and later played guitar with a blues band, The Falcons, but failed to win a recording deal. After the birth of their first child, daughter Rebbie, in 1950, Jackson left boxing and became a full-time crane operator for US Steel to support his family.
