The heartbroken husband of Kate Spade has revealed he was blindsided by his wife's suicide and said how he loved her despite the couple's separation.

David Spade has broken his silence about the apparent suicide of his sister-in-law, designer Kate Spade.

Andy Spade said he had conversed with his wife the night before she was found dead in her Manhattan apartment and she "sounded happy". "There was no indication and no warning that she would do this", he adds. "It was a complete shock", he said.

Cops were unclear as to why Spade, who became a fashion sensation a decade ago, would have taken her own life.

Spade leaves behind a 13-year-old daughter, Frances Beatrix, who was reportedly at school at the time of her mother's death.

First daughter Ivanka Trump, a fellow New Yorker with a clothing and accessories line, wrote on Twitter that Spade's death was "a painful reminder that we never truly know another's pain or the burden they carry". "We loved each other very much and simply needed a break", he said in his statement.

A statement from the family via in NY spokeswoman on Tuesday had said: "We are all devastated by today's tragedy". She was the kindest person I've ever known and my best friend for 35 years.

She told the Kansas City Star newspaper: "I will say this was not unexpected by me".

"We were freaked out/saddened", Saffo wrote to the paper, "but she kept watching it and watching it over and over".

"Although Kate has not been affiliated with the brand for more than a decade, she and her husband and creative partner, Andy, were the founders of our beloved brand", it said.

Spade stepped away from the limelight after selling her company in 2007... but she recently mounted a comeback.

Despite rumors, Spade insisted "this is the truth" and "anything else that is out there right now is false". Police say her body was found by housekeeping staff, and she'd left a note. I even said I (would) go with her and be a "patient" too (she liked that idea). There were no business problems.

"We ate many meals together as a family and continued to vacation together as a family".

Late on Tuesday, actor David Spade, who was Kate Spade's brother-in-law, remembered the fashion designer as someone "sharp and quick on her feet". We were coparenting our handsome daughter. "They were very much part of the front lane of the fashion universe".
