US soccer officials see the 2026 championship as an opportunity to further grow a sport that has blossomed since the '94 tournament with the ascent of first- and second-division pro leagues (Major League Soccer and United Soccer League) and a fertile environment for matches and events involving eminent teams from around the world.

In rating the risk assessment of both bidders, with grades of low-, medium- and high-risk, FIFA's own bid evaluation report gives Morocco three high-risk grades (stadiums, accommodation, and accommodation and transport), 10 medium and seven low.

While Morocco had some key factors in its favour - its much more friendly time-zone for the key TV markets of Europe, its footballing culture and potential tournament legacy - on infrastructural and financial fronts, the United bid blew it out of the water.

Moroccan officials, who have stressed throughout their campaign how snatching the tournament from under the noses of the North American favourites will transform the landscape of their country, remain quietly confident they can upset the odds.
