In the past six years, Aidan O'Brien has reduced the world's most famous Flat race to the equivalent of a private gallop down Tipperary way, but just as a record-equalling seventh win in the race beckoned through the odds-on favourite, Saxon Warrior, the rival powerhouse of Godolphin stole the £850,860 prize with the largely unfancied Masar.

His trainer Mark Johnston said: "We came here with doubts about his effectiveness on the track and I'm not sure it suits".

"Because of the camber he rolled on to the one on his inside, but he rallied again up the hill so it bodes really well for the future".

"I'm delighted for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed".

"He's still a big baby and probably the biggest horse in the field, everything suggests there should be better to come".

Dante victor Roaring Lion moved ominously well until the two furlong marker, and John Gosden's colt had to settle for third.
