Sister of Dutch queen dies aged 33 in Argentina

The youngest sister of Queen Maxima of Holland has been found dead in her apartment in Argentina's capital.

She was bridesmaid at her sister's wedding to then Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander in 2002 and is godmother to their youngest daughter, 11-year-old Princess Ariane. In 2010, while she attended the University of Belgrano in Buenos Aires, Zorreguieta wrote a thesis centered on suicide in order to receive her psychology degree.

Queen Maxima, 47, a native of Argentina, is "shocked and devastated" by her younger sister's death, according to a statement to Dutch newspaper De Volksrant.

Her body was found in her apartment in Buenos Aires late Wednesday night. It is intensely sad and heartbreaking news that can hardly be comprehended for those who stay behind. I wish them all the strength necessary to carry this terrible loss together.

She was a civil servant who had been working for the Argentinian government since 2016, in an office that oversees social policies.

Dutch state-run news agency RVD said the queen was "very shocked and very upset by the news".

She has cancelled her forthcoming engagements, including a state visit next week to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania which King Willem-Alexander will carry out alone. She had also worked for the social development ministry in Buenos Aires province and at a United Nations office in Panama.
