Trump aide Kellyanne Conway, Melania Trump react to border policy

Trump has blamed the situation on Democrats and falsely claimed there is a federal law forcing parents and children to be separated when they cross the border.

Children would be separated from their parents if the families had been apprehended entering the country illegally, John Kelly, then the Homeland Security Secretary, said in March 2017, "in order to deter more movement along this terribly unsafe network".

The former Breitbart News executive chairman said the president is simply enforcing the law in response to critics who say it is immoral to separate families.

According to a Department of Homeland Security spokesman, between April 19 and May 31, 1,995 children were separated from 1,940 adults who were being held by United States border patrol.

The statement added, "She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart". "You need 60 votes".

The immigration policy is largely the work of Attorney General Jeff Sessions who announced a "zero tolerance" policy earlier this year.

"When all of our great-great-grandparents came to America they weren't 'animals, ' and these people aren't either", Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said, while Pelosi, D-Calif., said that "we are all God's children".

Immigration on the southwest border has remained high since the zero-tolerance policies took effect.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders cited the Bible to defend a border policy that has separated children from their parents. The separations were not broken down by age, and included separations for illegal entry, immigration violations or possible criminal conduct by the adult.

The number represents a dramatic uptick from the almost 1,800 family separations that Reuters reported had happened from October 2016 through February of this year.

Reuters reported that Miller and Bannon this week lobbied Congress for the tough immigration reform package, which could see hundreds of thousands of so-called Dreamers, or those brought to the U.S.as children by undocumented immigrants, deported and barred from a path to citizenship.

Under U.S. law, most Mexican children are sent back across the border. One woman says an immigration official took her daughter away while she was breastfeeding. The Department of Homeland Security said Friday that almost 2,000 children have been placed into shelters over a six-week period.

Some moderate Republicans have also called on Trump to stop the separations. Collins said during a Sunday appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation" that the Trump administration's policy of pursuing criminal charges against immigrants and separating children from families along the southern border is "inconsistent with American values" and "traumatizing" to the children.

Separately, senior White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that "nobody likes" the separation of migrant children from their parents, but repeated Trump's view that the burden for changing it is on Democrats.

HHS is tasked with caring for "unaccompanied alien children", which by law is any minor that arrives at the border without parents or relatives, or for whom loved ones were not "available to provide care and physical custody".

"I'm looking at both of them", he said. "I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the goal of order". "So if they don't like that law, they should change it", Conway explains.
