FDA Recalls Heart Medications Containing the Active Ingredient Valsartan

According to a relevant official, the DRAP asked pharmaceutical companies to call in all such products made from valsartan supplied by Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals, while the authority's federal and provincial additional directors were told to enforce the recall.

The United Kingdom's regulatory agencies advised pharmacies there July 5 to recall "all batches of valsartan containing medicines made by Dexcel Pharma Ltd and Accord Healthcare as a precaution" as the result of an "urgent investigation".

Three companies that sell the generic drug, valsartan, in the United States agreed to recall it after the FDA said might be tainted by N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), considered a probable human carcinogen.

Despite the possible danger to health, the FDA said that patients must continue with the medicine until they have a replacement as Valsartan is used to treat serious medical conditions and patients can not stop taking medication without another valid prescription.

In Europe and Asia, Novartis, the company that originally developed the drug, said Sandoz valsartan and valsartan/HCT film-coated tablets are being recalled because they "do not meet our high quality standards".

The company supplies the ingredient to manufacturers producing some of the valsartan medicines available in the European Union, and some initial reports were that US manufacturers were not affected.

The FDA said not all products containing valsartan were being recalled in the United States.

TEVA is notifying its Direct Accounts by FedEx Overnight mailing to immediately discontinue distribution of the specific lots being recalled and to notify their sub-accounts of this product recall and making arrangements for impacted product to be returned to Inmar.

To determine if a specific product has been recalled, look at the drug name and company name on the prescription bottle's label. It is commonly used in combination with hydrochlorothiazide to treat hypertension.

If you don't know where you medication came from in the past, your pharmacy should have that information. "As a precaution, the review will also consider whether other valsartan medicines may be affected".

This recall is being conducted with the full knowledge of the U.S. FDA.

Prinston Pharmaceutical, doing business as Solco Healthcare, is recalling "all lots" of Valsartan tablets manufactured by Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceutical. The distribution firm is notifying distributors and other customers by recall letter and arranging for return of all recalled products.
