It had always been rumored that James would be joining the Lakers as a free agent.

Yahoo Sports and ESPN are reporting LeBron James is planning to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.

American basketball superstar LeBron James has agreed to a four-year, 154 million USA dollar deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, his agency group Klutch Sports tweeted on Sunday evening.

James is considered a rival of retired Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan for the title of greatest player in National Basketball Association history.

"The entire Cavaliers franchise thanks LeBron for that precious moment and for all of the excitement he delivered as he led our team to four straight NBA Finals appearances". Now that it's Monday, the local newspapers in Cleveland can appropriately say goodbye to their star and hometown product, and those in Los Angeles can welcome their new free agent acquisition with the fanfare he deserves.

This is a risky time for the Lakers, because they need to be wise in how the spend their remaining cap space and assets in an attempt to turn the Lakers into a title contender just one year after winning just 35 games last season. The Lakers are hoping they can persuade him to sign with them and return them to glory.

"I am sure the Lakernation is rejoicing".

With James signing in Los Angeles, that should invite plenty of agonizing debates regarding which player is better: LeBron James or Kobe Bryant.

Former Hollywood action hero and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also weighed in. "And you're without going to be the biggest star of all, on the court and off the court".

He joined the league In 2003 as the first overall draft pick by Cleveland.

The 33-year-old has left his hometown team for the second time in his career having previously departed in 2010 to join the Miami Heat.

"Thank you Northeast Ohio for an incredible 4 seasons", Akron-native James wrote.

Many have already wondered what the NBA Finals might look like without James taking on the Warriors every year.

When James said he was coming back to the Cavs, he promised a championship, and he delivered on that promise, and Cavs fans seem to be forever grateful.

James will make $25.65 million next season.

But money and years of security were less a concern than being able to play for a title contender. This is a fun signing for a Lakers team that will be the talk of the National Basketball Association for the rest of the offseason and throughout the regular season.

James just flew back to Los Angeles from a family vacation in the Caribbean - fuelling talk the LA Lakers are the frontrunners to secure his services.
