Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile Virus in Fort Collins

Mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus are more likely to bite during the evening, night, and early morning.

St. Louis County workers routinely check mosquitoes for the virus during the summer to focus their pest control efforts. A statement from the public health department says that no human cases have been reported this year.

Reduce the amount of time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn.

The region advises residents to cover up when heading outside, wear bug repellents like DEET or Icaridin, and protect the home from insects using screens over windows and doors.

Use air-conditioning and make sure window and door screens are in good fix to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside.

Wear shoes, socks, long trousers, and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods, or when mosquitoes are most active.

Although no human cases of WNV have been confirmed health officials are urging residents to take precautions.

"People who work outside, especially at dusk and dawn, and those who are camping over the next few weeks are at higher risk of being bitten by mosquitoes and should pay particular attention to preventing these bites".

When using repellent, always follow the recommendations on the product label.

Planes will release Trumpet EC, an EPA-registered insecticide routinely used to curb mosquito populations across the country, the news release said.

Remove trash and clutter, and dispose of discarded tires and containers that can hold water. Change the water in pet dishes and replace the water in bird baths weekly.

The Pocket-area canal, which is full of often stagnant water, has been identified as a problem area. Mosquitoes are grouped (pooled) for testing according to species, collection site, and date. Pittsfield will conduct another truck-mounted spraying from 10 p.m.to midnight this Monday on roads within a 1-mile radius of the Route 41 and Route 20 intersection.
