Netflix adds 'Smart Downloads' feature for mobile users

The upgrade automatically deletes downloaded episodes that been watched and replaces them with the next episode when you're connected to Wi-Fi, freeing up storage space on your device.

Netflix subscribers with plenty of available mobile data and a high-end smartphone would therefore be more likely to manually download shows and movies, and often download a number of episodes, or even an entire season, in a single go.

Building off the option to download content for offline viewing in 2016, Netflix is adding a new feature called Smart Downloads. You can get the Netflix Android app here.

Netflix will also begin downloading the next episode for viewing after the previous one has finished playing. The feature will only be available initially on Android phones and tablets, and is focused on episodic series, not movies or specials.

What are Smart Downloads? And smart downloads will progress into the next season of a series.

The feature is great for pushing movies or shows on the device before you go on a vacation, travel overseas, or prepare for that 10-hour long drive with your kids in the back of the vehicle.

The feature won't be all that useful if you don't download a couple of episodes in advance. So a user with the first three episodes of a show downloaded will have the first deleted and the fourth installed after watching the initial content. Now, it's improving the perk with a new feature that seamlessly manages downloads.

"Downloading today is a very manual process, and most of the time people will only download a couple episodes of a show at a time", Johnson said last week in a briefing, according to CNET.

Netflix was reluctant to add offline download support to their mobile application. Smart Downloads also automatically deletes a downloaded episode once the user is done watching it.
