Elon Musk's unique brand of merchandise has no shortage of fans, and his latest product is no exception.

Tesla briefly sold surfboards on its website, but if you didn't pick up one of the $US1,500 models you're probably out of luck - only 200 were put up for sale.

"Model S, X and 3 can comfortably accommodate this surfboard on either the inside or outside of the vehicle", the item description reads. Tesla was seeking a total of $1,500 for each of the surfboards.

Elon Musk's auto company has sent a letter to suppliers asking them to return a portion of the money they had been paid. The Tesla site says they feature "a mix of the same high-quality matte and gloss finishes used on all our cars", along with a deck "reinforced with light-weight "Black Dart" carbon fiber" and "tonal logos in subtle contrast gloss".

The run of 200 limited edition surfboards is unlikely to contribute to Tesla's revenues. One final disappointment: the fins you see on the bottom of the board aren't actually included with the board. They were created as part of a collaboration between Tesla Design Studio and Lost Surfboards. According to The Drive, the Tesla boards appear to be geared toward collectors, and not for riding the actual waves. eBay is now your only hope for snagging a Tesla surfboard - that is, if you're willing to shell out upwards of $5,000 for a single board. Even those who were lucky enough to buy one will have to wait up to 10 weeks before their board gets delivered.
