USA economy adds more jobs than expected in June

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the June 2018 jobs report Friday, showing payroll employment was up by 213,000 and many sectors added jobs.

May's job gains were also revised up to 244,000 from 223,000, and job gains have now averaged 211,000 per month over the last three months.

Ontario's economy added 35,000 new jobs in June, but again, more people were looking for work putting upward pressure on the unemployment rate provincially.

One area that remains sluggish is wage growth, which grew 2.7% when compared with the same period a year ago.

The percentage of unemployment attributable to voluntary quits fell to 12.4 percent, more than reversing a big jump reported in May.

Despite the low unemployment and struggles to find workers, companies still appear hesitant to significantly raise pay in many industries. An acceleration of this rate would show that employers are indeed paying up for the skilled workers who they say are in decreasing supply.

"A 32K rise in employment was refreshing news after a couple of weak months". Trump has suggested that more than $500 billion worth of Chinese imports could be taxed in his drive to force Beijing to reform its trade policies, which he insists have unfairly victimized the United States.

Gross domestic product estimates for the April-June period are above a 4 per cent annualized rate, double the 2.0 per cent pace logged in the first quarter.

Major trade partners, including China, Canada, Mexico and the European Union, have retaliated with their own tariffs.

Manufacturers added 36,000 jobs last month. The factory jobs were concentrated in the automobile sector, which had seen a decline in employment in May after a fire at a parts supplier disrupted production.

Professional and technical services added 25,100 jobs in June, more than its average of 18,900 over the past year. The manufacturing sector buzzed with activity last month, and spending on construction rose. That followed an increase of 5,000 jobs in May.
