The next day, hundreds of white supremacists and counterprotesters clashed in the streets before a auto plowed into a crowd, killing 32-year-old counterprotester Heather Heyer.

Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) commemorated Heather Heyer, the woman killed protesting the rally, and two state troopers killed when their helicopter crashed during the law enforcement response to the violence.

Northam said, "Virginia continues to mourn the three Virginians who lost their lives in the course of the demonstrations a year ago".

There is concern that the anniversary of last year's awful, deadly event will draw a "sizable number of people" in Charlottesville for the weekend "with all sorts of agendas", Ryan expressed.

In a report from USA Today, Virginia State Police Superintendent Gary Settle said more than 700 state police will be activated during the weekend and "state police is fully prepared to act" to prevent any incidents like a year ago.

Stern also said that $2 million in funding has been activated under the declaration to pay for the statewide response this weekend.

Organizer Jason Kessler, who also organized last year's "Unite the Right" rally, said in his permit application that this weekend's event is a "white civil rights rally".

The company is citing its community values as grounds to cut ties with participants of the rallies, which stemmed from a protest past year to protect Confederate statues - which included neo-Nazi groups - but exploded in violence. Kessler filed a lawsuit over the denials but dropped the court challenge in late July, saying he wanted to focus on a rally outside of the White House approved by the National Park Service.

A second permit for a counter-protest was also issued.

The city is closing downtown streets and public parks and restricting access to a downtown "security area", where visitors are prohibited from wearing masks or carrying certain items, including skateboards, catapults, glass bottles, bats and knives.

At Equinox, also near the White House, owners Ellen Kassoff Gray and chef Todd Gray say they've never closed during protests, but expect business to suffer this weekend.

"I hope that the images and the noise that we are able to create with this will make people feel empowered", said Makia Green, Black Lives Matter DC core organizer.

Events will begin Saturday in Charlottesville, Va., the site of last year's demonstration.

"Very, very few of our visitors share the views that will be expressed in Lafayette Park on Sunday", Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, said.

"We have seen in the past where these two groups have been in the same area at the same time, it leads to violent confrontations", Newsham said at a press briefing Thursday. Heyer was killed when a man plowed his vehicle into a group of counterprotesters.
