Elliott earns first Cup victory; runs out of fuel at finish

With his famous father, Hall of Famer Bill Elliott spotting from above, Chase maintained his slim advantage as Truex tried to find a way by. It was a two-car race as the rest of the field was more than 11 seconds back.

Truex ran second to Elliott for most of the final stage before beginning a steady close.

Elliott's first win came in his 99th start. Elliott pulled out to a half-second lead while Truex was fighting to get back to the front after a restart mired him in 12th.

Hamlin is mired in ninth in the standings, almost 300 points behind Busch, and has been consistently running just outside the top 10.

Moments later, Joey Logano slid off course on lap two and dropped to the rear of the field, then headed to the garage with a broken radiator, his day done. He beat AJ Allmendinger by 3.3 seconds. The first caution of the race came out on lap three as #10 Aric Almirola was sent spinning coming out of turn seven. Busch was the early race favorite and led 31 laps before giving up the lead to Elliott.

Hamlin, Elliott and Erik Jones pitted on lap 17 as teams revealed their strategies while Busch, who dominated the segment, and Truex stayed on track. "So thrilled, so emotional, so much relief, you know, working on three years hadn't won one".

The NASCAR Cup Series is racing at Watkins Glen. It occurred on an afternoon where he led a race-high 52 laps and won Stage 2 - his third consecutive race with a stage win.

Hamlin traversed the 2.45-mile layout at 125.534 miles per hour on Saturday to take the top spot in the No. 11 Toyota, just ahead of Busch.

Mired in a confounding losing streak since the start of his NASCAR Cup career in 2016, Chase Elliott finally broke into the win column Sunday, holding off road course ace Martin Truex Jr.to win the Go Bowling at the Glen event at Watkins Glen. Seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson wound up using his vehicle to push Elliott to his first victory celebration.

Racing announced Saturday afternoon that the NASCAR Hall of Famer would race in the August 26 Xfinity Series race at Road America. NASCAR returns to the Irish Hills of Michigan next weekend for the Consumer's Energy 400, at Michigan International Speedway.
