When asked whether he expected to welcome a fresh additions to his United squad, Mourinho offered these comments: "The information I have is no".

Mourinho's targets for that position were primarily Leicester City's Harry Maguire, Jérôme Boateng of Bayern Munich and Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham.

"Like any big club, they need some silverware - in his first season at Old Trafford, 2016-17, Mourinho won two trophies - the League Cup and Europa League - but he won nothing last season".

"The net expenditure is a record as it stands but you'd think with three weeks left for European clubs to buy Premier League players, and Premier League clubs by the looks of it not having done their selling yet, it might not stay that way".

"It is hard to believe that we finished second because you are capable of making people that finish second look like they were relegated, and people who win nothing, finish below us, and you make them look like serial winners".

"My view is that first of all it is hard for me to believe that we finished second when I listen, when I read - not much but sometimes I do", the United boss said.

As the season progresses the significance of each game will become more important, but other factors such as styles, potential individual battles and entertainment value will be considered.

Sergio Romero, Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Dalot, Ander Herrera and Matic are all injured for Leicester's visit, while Mourinho needs to check on the fitness of those that returned late from the World Cup.

"I will have to focus on the players I have and in relation to this first couple of matches". I was told that during pre-season it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane.
