The Florida contest came on the last big day of state nominating contests before the November 6 elections, when Democrats will try to pick up 23 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and two seats in the Senate to gain majorities and slam the brakes on Trump's legislative agenda.

"She's the biggest flip-flopper in history", Arpaio said of McSally in a recent interview.

That's a message that may play well among a general electorate in West Virginia, where Trump won by more than 40 percentage points in 2016, but Trump carried Florida by only a single percentage point. He's the Democrats' highest-performing statewide candidate of the last 12 years, having nearly won his 2014 race for state superintendent. Without wasting much time, Flake replied to Trump on Twitter, saying his claim about an attempted endorsement was false.
