Having joined the Premier League giants back in the summer of 2016, Pogba aided United to win the League Cup and the Europa League but there were reports that the 25-year-old was having feuds with Mourinho as the two mega personalities were having ego's clashing. The 55-year-old does have a habit of doing the unthinkable and crossing the line but is now probably losing the plot. United said they were happy to be kept informed.

"They need to get a centre-back in". They trained on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and today, so you can imagine that they're not really fit and ready, but we have needs.

Harry Maguire was a genuine target, and although no progress was ever made with Leicester, United are still admirers of the England player.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has shed some light on defender Toby Alderweireld's future in north London.

Mourinho wanted a third choice home-grown eligible goalkeeper and Lee Grant was signed.

The club only wanted to sign a defender in the bracket of Raphaël Varane, although Real Madrid would not listen to any offers for the World Cup victor.

Red Devils chief executive Ed Woodward even met with Real President Florentino Perez over the summer to sound him out over the centre-back's availability, but were told he was unavailable.

"He is a great player and my team mate from Chile". Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young and Jesse Lingard return to training after extended leaves on Monday, which means that they are likely to be unfit for the match.

"To know how they feel physically mentally to try to give us a help, if they feel they can help us, 20 minutes, 10 minutes, half an hour. I have to focus on the players I have and the next few matches".

Elsewhere, Everton is hopeful of tying up a deal for Barcelona center-back Yerry Mina, who scored three times for Colombia at the World Cup, and Brazilian winger Bernard.

Jose Mourinho has not had the best of times at Manchester United this pre-season.

"I have my players and I like my players", Mourinho said. "I won eight championships and three Premier Leagues but I keep feeling the second [place] last season was one of my biggest achievements in the game".
