New York Yankees: Is the American League East race over?

What was supposed to be an extended series between two of the sport's best teams has instead been a one-sided affair.

Heading into the weekend, there was a sense that the four-game series between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox in Boston could provide some of the most compelling regular season matchups in recent memory.

Matt Harvey takes the mound against the Washington Nationals in first start against an NL East opponent since the New York Mets shipped him to Cincinnati in May. That defeat to the lowly Orioles kicked off a losing streak that reached its fifth game with Sunday's 5-4 loss in 10 innings at Fenway Park.

Well, the Boston Red Sox that's who.

CUBS 5, PADRES 4 Kyle Schwarber and Anthony Rizzo homered in a five-run second inning and host Chicago hung on from there to beat San Diego. The Red Sox then scored on a walk-off single from Andrew Benintendi in the 10th to complete the sweep in dramatic fashion.

But thanks to a soft August schedule, the Yankees will get healthy on the field and in the standings. However, when the team listed its probable starters for the next series, it was RHP Rick Porcello.

"This is a time when it's obviously tough for us right now, and that's when you've got to look around the room and you've got to lean on each other and count on each other, and we will do that", Boone said. But who knows what kind of psychic shape these Yankees are in right now?

If I were Cashman, I'd disappear for the remainder of the season and pray that Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez (2016 version) and even Clint Frazier heal quickly from injuries to boost this team's chances of advancing beyond the wild card game. The Yankees also reorganized their rotation just before the start of the series with Sonny Gray being moved to the bullpen. The Yankees will send a rookie to the mound in his Major League debut to try to put a halt to Major League Baseball's most productive offense, per Baseball Reference stats, in a late-afternoon game that will live stream from Fenway Park.

These Yankees were built with beating the Red Sox in mind, not holding on desperately to a wild-card spot. However, Boone is hopeful that getting swept can turn into a rallying point for the Yankees.

"It definitely got emotional, but I think more than anything it probably fired us up and might have got us locked in", Porcello said.

For the Yankees, all is not lost.

The 2018 postseason could feature the same path to a championship for them.

For the Yankees, it was a stunning reversal of the Boston Massacre in 1978 when the Yankees came to town and swept the Red Sox en route to erasing a large lead and capturing the AL East.
