U.S. Republican Sen. John McCain, who spent six years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, has died after battling brain cancer.

"My father, United States Senator John McCain III, departed this life today", McCain began. As the son and grandson of four-star Navy admirals, McCain followed in their footsteps by attending the U.S. Naval Academy, where he continued to rebel against regulations and graduated near the bottom of his class. From fighting for American values overseas as a U.S. Navy pilot and master of worldwide relations, to standing up for Arizona's rights here at home in the United States Senate, John was a maverick in the best sense of the word, often working across the aisle to fight for what he believed was best for our state and all Americans.

A White House official said Trump also called McCain following word of the senator's diagnosis. His wife, Cindy, remembered her husband as living life on his own terms. "My prayers go out to Senator McCain's friends, family, and constituents during this time - you are in our hearts".

Ducey has said he won't consider appointing politicians who lobbied for McCain's seat prematurely.

Many American allies would have described him as their greatest friend in the US Congress. "I'm going to continue to serve as governor as long as the voters will let me", he said. John McCain was a maverick and a fighter, never afraid to stand for his beliefs. Republican strategists and donors have also discussed former Sen.

"His honor was being questioned and that's nothing that he takes lightly", said Mark Salter, McCain's biographer and co-author of his new memoir, "The Restless Wave".

"As young pilots in SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape School) we learned what John McCain endured".

Melania Trump thanked McCain for his service.

Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker has revealed how he, too, is one with the country by sending out a heartfelt tweet expressing his grief on the loss of one of America's most prominent political figures.

He was admitted earlier that month to Walter Reed National Military Center for treatment of side effects from chemotherapy and radiation to beat glioblastoma, a terminal and aggressive form of brain cancer.

In running for president in 2008, McCain tried to succeed an unpopular fellow Republican in Bush, who was leaving office with the country mired in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and stuck in a financial crisis. "It's hard to lose him, but I know the legacy he leaves will long remain". Back on McCain's Arizona ranch, the senator gave Collins an extensive nature tour of the property. John McCain (R-AZ), passed away late Saturday afternoon.

"John McCain was a patriot of the highest order, a public servant of rarest courage".

Following the announcement of his death on Saturday evening, USA president Donald Trump said his "deepest sympathies" went to Mr McCain's family.

Held at the notorious "Hanoi Hilton" prison and other sites, McCain was beaten and tortured, suffering broken bones and dysentery.
