The win exposes the rifts in America's opposition party and comes comes two months after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice and left-winger, won a similar victory.

She also supports measures deemed radical by many, including abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a federal agency that has enforced President Trump's crackdown on illegal migrants.

Her competitor also had nice words about her: "Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman, and I will tell you that Massachussets will be well served".

The race between Capuano and Pressley was perhaps the most closely watched contest in MA, especially since Pressley drew comparisons to Ocasio-Cortez.

Capuano, 66, is the second House Democrat to lose a primary to a progressive challenger this year, NY reports.

The Democrats face a hard but vital choice: In their selection of a choice of presidential nominee, do they move to the centre to win back traditional, conservative-oriented party members, especially blue-collar voters, who defected to Mr. Trump in 2016, and to attract suburban voters, especially women, who are discomfited by Mr. Trump's personal style and character?

An incumbent Congressman from MA won't be returning to Washington after an upset at the Democratic primary this week.

Winning Tuesday's primary in the safe Democratic seat puts Pressley on course to become the first African American in MA to be elected to the US House of Representatives.
