Facebook subsidiary Oculus, however, has chose to take another route with its latest headset, instead favouring the all-in-one virtual reality experience to one tethered to a powerful gaming PC.

At this point, there are no indications of what kind of hardware is installed inside this standalone VR headset, but we'd imagine that it's beefier than what's available with the $199 Oculus Go. "This is the all-in-one VR headset that we have been waiting for". The Oculus Rift has to be connected to a powerful PC, which drives up cost, and it requires external sensors to enable 6DoF tracking. But to track your position, the headset has four "ultra-light" sensors on the headset's edges, which can register your position in a room relative to your surroundings.

Using Oculus Quest in the demo, the experience looked like a pencil-traced view of the real world, with virtual objects floating in. Facebook improved the built-in audio, so you get high-quality, immersive sound with even deeper bass.

Oculus Quest is slated to retail for $399 for the 64GB model, prices and other storage sizes are yet to be revealed.

Oculus Quest is going to be a big step forward for VR.

Using YouTube VR, Oculus Go users can set themselves up in a virtual movie theatre or comfy living room to take in various VR videos, including nature documentaries and 360-degree concert videos. The cabled offering still offers some visual advantages over Quest. It would be surprising to see an untethered headset that can last more than a few hours, but we'll obviously have to wait and see what Oculus Quets has to offer.

Quest will be bundled together with a new Touch controller that looked nearly similar to existing Touch controllers for Rift.

Zuckerberg also pledged to port many PC-based VR games and apps to the Quest, bringing the device closer to the higher-end PC-based Oculus Rift.

What we do know about Oculus Quest is that it'll include the same optics as the Oculus Go, with a resolution of 1,600 x 1,440-pixels per eye.
