'Venom' Launches to $80 Million, 'A Star Is Born' Draws $42.6 Million

A Star is Born did much better with the critics, leading to a 91 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to the $80 million domestic tally, "Venom" also picked up a hefty $125.2 million overseas for a current worldwide total of $205,230,000.

Steven O'Dell, Sony's president of global distribution, said the studio wanted to carve out a new approach for the comic-book adaptation with the PG-13-rated "Venom".

While "Venom" attracted a younger, majority male audience, crowds for "A Star is Born" were more female, at 66 percent, and older, at 68 percent over 35. THR also reports that the strength of these two movies delivered an "all-time high of roughly $174 million for the month of October".

"A Star Is Born's" big box office is a good start for a film that will likely be a big contender during awards season this winter.

National Geographic's second weekend of rock climbing documentary "Free Solo" finished 12th with $540,000 at only 41 sites, followed by Fox's debut of teen drama "The Hate U Give" with $500,000 at 36 locations. It also pulled in £4 million at the United Kingdom box office. "If we keep this up, there's no question we're going to get a record".

The Sony comic-book movie "Venom" has shrugged off bad reviews to shatter the October box-office record with a US$80 million debut, while Bradley Cooper's "A Star Is Born" soared to $42.6 million. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
