Axios reported that Haley and Trump discussed her resignation last week, when she visited the White House. And CNN's was far from the only theory out there. "Her frank and clear-eyed assessments of global threats, as well as much-needed reforms at the United Nations, were in the best tradition of American leadership". Israel's UN Ambassador praises Haley as "true friend of Israel".

Ms Haley indicated she did not where her next role would be, but ruled out running for the 2020 presidency.

Trump said that together they "solved a lot of problems" and said he hoped she could come back to the administration in another capacity.

Haley's United Nations counterparts described her as charming, yet very tough. The president said Haley told him six months ago she would be leaving at the end of the year. She's helped rein in Iranian aggression, moved progress on a denuclearized North Korea, assured Israel we have her back, and overall just gained the USA more respect on the global stage.

The move removes yet another moderate Republican voice from the Trump Cabinet, and is likely to stoke Democratic concerns that he will replace her with a conservative hardliner more in lockstep with his "America first" philosophy. She said there were no personal reasons for her departure, she just knew it was "time to step aside".

Lindsey Graham of SC in a statement after the news broke Tuesday morning. "And I do think it's good to rotate in other people who can put that same energy and power into it".
