Barty beats Wang to win WTA Elite Trophy final

Barty burst out of the blocks against Wang to take a 4-0 lead but, just as it looked like the opening set was over, the Chinese took advantage of some sloppy service games from her opponent to get back to 4-3. This year's total prize money was $2.35 million across the singles and doubles tournaments. Additionally, she reaches the career-high ranking and an all-important top-16 seeding at 2019 Australian Open.

The Australian, Barty took 82 minutes to claim her second title of this year.

"It's been a great finish in China this week", Barty said after Sunday's win.

The ninth seed imposed herself early in the match, winning the first four games on her way to taking the first set comfortably.

The American was due to play Garbine Muguruza on Saturday evening at the Hengqin International Tennis Centre in Zhuhai for a place in Sunday's final.

Making her second appearance in the tournament, Barty completed the fifth Top 20 win in 2018, having beaten No.18 Osaka (Nottingham), No.18 Bertens (Montréal), No.3 Kerber (Wuhan) and No.18 Garcia (Zhuhai).

Remarkably she started 2017 ranked No.325 in the world to begin her tennis comeback.
