Wayne Rooney heads a squad named by England manager Gareth Southgate for the upcoming games against the United States and Croatia - with Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson called up for the first time.
The return of record goalscorer Rooney has split opinion, with the 33-year-old set to collect a 120th cap in the November 15 friendly against the USA to honour his Three Lions career.
But England's most-capped player, Peter Shilton, accused the FA of getting it "completely wrong" by offering Rooney - who retired from global football past year - what is effectively a testimonial appearance.
Southgate did not rule out the possibility of the former England captain wearing the armband again. We haven't decided on that at this time, so he wouldn't wear No. 10 because he won't start the game. He's our greatest goalscorer and so why not give him the send-off he deserves? "I am still able to look to the future in terms of the squad we have picked", insisted Southgate.
"There's still a long way to go", said the 25-year-old.
"Having said that, we've given caps to people who haven't earned them in the past - I'm not going to name names - and you do wonder how on earth they got them".
"I understand that has caused debate but for me, it is a small way of appreciating what he has given to his country".More news: The 'thank u, next' meme is being embraced by every fandom
Southgate revealed talks over Rooney's involvement have been going on for a year, ever since his global retirement.
Southgate revealed he wants to "protect" his core squad as much as possible in the friendly against the United States before they play Croatia in the UEFA Nations League - a competition the England manager insists he takes seriously.
