Here's a first look at Samsung’s new foldable smartphone

Samsung first unveiled a prototype for a foldable phone in 2014, which looks vastly different than the one we saw on Wednesday. OLED on a plastic substrate can make displays hardy, flexible, foldable – even rollable.

The bigger screen can split into three active areas at once, meaning three apps can run at the same time.

There is a confusion on what Samsung will call this phone; some say the Galaxy X and others, the Galaxy F. Whatever the name, it is expected that when spread the device can offer 7.3 inches of real estate and can be folded horizontally; again, a vertically openable model may also be in the works.

There's also a greater emphasis on dark mode, which saves power on an AMOLED display, as black pixels do not need to be lit.

Royole said the foldable phone would go on sale as a consumer device in China in December, but in the U.S. it would be available only as a developer model, costing US$1,318 for 128 GB of storage and US$1,469 for 256 GB, according to Mashable. While Samsung has so far been incapable of mass-producing OLED TV panels, the display manufacturer has a tight grip on the segment for small and medium-sized OLED panels.

"The foldable display lays the foundation for a new kind of mobile experience", said Koh Dong-jin, president and CEO of the IT and mobile communications division at Samsung. They've been teasing a folding model for about five years now, and here it is. OLED displays in many modern smartphones are actually already flexible if you were to remove them from the rigid casing, but not to the same degree as these new displays. Huawei CEO Richard Yu confirmed recently that the Chinese giant, now the world's second-largest smartphone vendor after Samsung, was working on foldable 5G phones.

OLED technology has now given consumers screens with built-in speakers and incredibly thin “wallpaper” displays.

The main screen of the Samsung foldable comes with a 4.2:3 aspect ratio and the cover a 21:9 aspect ratio. All of this in less than a decade.
