Stephen A. Smith: Duke Basketball Can Go Undefeated

And all Duke did was hand John Calipari the most lopsided loss of his 10-year tenure in Lexington.

Both Barrett and Williamson surpassed Marvin Bagley III's program record for points by a freshman in his debut at 25.

Kansas looked like the No. 1 team for, oh, about two hours because Zion Williamson happened.

Three Duke players scored at least 22 points while freshman Keldon Johnson tallied 23 points for Kentucky in the losing effort. Graduate transfer Reid Travis added 22 for the Wildcats, who had won all nine previous season openers under Calipari.

But the freshmen made sure this highly-anticipated game was never close.

12-10 - Kentucky's lead in the all-time series with Duke.

The Blue Devils only committed four turnovers compared with Kentucky's 15.

Duke handed Calipari the worst loss of his coaching career at United Kingdom and he let his players know midway of the second half he had seen enough.

Kentucky never got closer than 27 the rest of the game.

Barrett finished with 33 points, four rebounds and six assists in the game.

Kentucky: It was an embarrassing performance for the Wildcats, who weren't physical enough against Williamson and couldn't keep up with Barrett. Most teams don't have that kind of combination, but it's clear Kentucky needs to improve dramatically to keep up with the nation's top teams.

Duke was able to limit turnovers, as the Blue Devils had a significant turnover margin.

The Blue Devils, however, may have issues with their depth going forward as they received very little from their non-freshmen and from their reserves until garbage time.

Kentucky: Tyler Herro was the only other player to reach double figures. Duke would go on to shoot over 50 percent from the floor. The Wildcats were outscored 60-38 in the paint.

Grimes scored 21 points in his college debut and Lawson added 20 points in his first game with the Jayhawks, helping Kansas stymie No. 10 Michigan State's late charge for a victory in the season-opening Champions Classic.

Head coach Mike Krzyzewski of the Duke Blue Devils celebrates with fans after defeating the North Carolina Tar Heels 79-73 at Cameron Indoor Stadium on February 9, 2011 in Durham, North Carolina. When he goes up against teams that play the 2-3 zone, Williamson is going to have to prove he can consistently hit the outside jumper.
