"It was a big day yesterday, an incredible day", Trump said following Tuesday's midterm election in which Republicans lost the House but increased their hold on the Senate.

Early Wednesday, Trump warned Democrats against using their new majority to investigate his administration.

Democrats won ... seats in elections to the 435-strong House of Representatives, whose members are proportional to the population of states, reflecting the will and sentiment of the people in numerical terms.

In Minnesota, Omar, a 36-year-old naturalized American citizen and state representative, campaigned on policies embraced by the Democratic Party's most liberal wing: universal health care, free college tuition and robust public housing. And it made clear the extent to which Trump has remade his party to his own specifications, as he suggested that those who survived were indebted to him, a president who prizes loyalty above all else.

A Democratic House isn't going to put the United States back in the Iranian nuclear accord or the Paris climate agreement, and is unlikely to challenge Trump's protectionist line on trade.

"I am so honoured to share both the ballot and the stage with the many visionary, bold women who have raised their hand to run for public office", said Ayanna Pressley, who became the first black woman elected to Congress from MA.

Trump reeled off a shopping list of disadvantages he claimed that the Republicans had faced going into Tuesday's vote, including "wealthy donors and special interests" for the Democrats, and "very hostile media coverage".

In Ohio, Senator Sherrod Brown said his re-election in a state Trump won proved that "progressives can win - and win decisively - in the heartland". He said he would be happy to help "supply her the necessary votes".

Even in the Senate where Democrats lost ground, they won the popular vote in those races by 15 points (they got 57 percent of the popular vote; the Republicans - just 42 percent).

Mr McConnell said the contentious, partisan fight over US Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's nomination was "very helpful" in winning Senate seats, like an "adrenaline shot" for Republican voters.

She also referenced Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters of California, another favorite Trump villain, who is set to lead the powerful Financial Services Committee.

The president's party will maintain control of the executive and judicial branches of the government, in addition to the Senate, but Democrats suddenly have a foothold that gives them subpoena power to probe deep into Trump's personal and professional missteps - and his long-withheld tax returns. U.S. Rep. -elect Lori Trahan, who easily bested her GOP opponent in the open race for the 3rd District, told Boston Herald Radio she is undecided on whether to support Pelosi.

But she added: "A Democratic Congress will work for solutions that bring us together, because we have all had enough of division".

But after eight years in the minority, Democrats hoping to reclaim the White House in 2020 will also have to prove they are interested in governing - and temper the liberal ambitions of the party's most ardent left-wingers.

Internal Revenue Service law allows House and Senate tax-writing committees to request federal returns, and the ranking Ways and Means Democrat, Rep. Richard Neal of MA, has signaled publicly he would ask for them - a move the White House might fight.
