The pair have been involved in a bitter feud after Ramos injured Lovren's best mate, Mohamed Salah, in the last season's Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool.

'He is a great player and I respect what he has achieved but he is not the best, he is not my type of central defender, ' Van Dijk told De Telegraaf.

Ramos had attempted to defuse the row in a pre-game news conference, insisting he had no interest in responding to the initial criticism, but Lovren claimed Luis Enrique's side lacked class in defeat.

"He's got that horribleness about him - and that's a good thing in a defender, in my experience, even if I was on the end of a lot of that in my career!"

He was critical of Ramos prior to Croatia's Nations League game with Spain on Thursday night and carried on the insults after the beaten World Cup finalist's dramatic 3-2 victory.

The Dutchman admitted he is not a fan of Ramos' last-ditch style of defending.

Lovren, who insisted that he's one of the world's best defenders after Croatia reached the World Cup final in Russian Federation, caused a further stir earlier this week by taking another pop at Ramos following his national team's 3-2 victory over Spain in the UEFA Nations League.

For Real Madrid fans, Sergio Ramos is more than just a defender.

"I do not know if it was deliberate but mentally something changed when Salah came off", he added.

"Suddenly, Marcelo, Benzema and Ronaldo all appeared at Trent and released the entire right side". With Salah they never dared to do that. Then when his other arm is injured, they say that I've done a judo move on him. "Sometimes I think about that night".
