George HW Bush flies back to capital for final salute

America's VetDogs, which trains and places dogs with veterans and first-responders, put Sully with Bush earlier this year and announced Sunday the dog will join Walter Reed National Military Medical Center's facility dog program after a stop in NY.

Bush's body will be transported to the U.S. Capitol, where he will lie in state in the building's rotunda until Wednesday morning. The unique Boeing 747 the normally flies as "Air Force One" was renamed "Special Air Mission 41" for the flight, as it traveled to Joint Base Andrews in the Maryland suburbs of Washington.

Bush, who served a single term in the White House 1989 to 1993, will receive a state funeral Wednesday at the National Cathedral in Washington, followed by burial Thursday at his presidential library in Texas.

Two days after Bush's death at age 94, family spokesman Jim McGrath posted a touching photograph Monday of the yellow Labrador retriever lying down in front of Bush's casket, with the accompanying phrase "Mission Complete" and the hashtag #Remembering41.

In hindsight, Dukakis said he failed during the campaign to draw attention to the leniency of the federal furlough program that was in place while Bush was vice president. Thousands of mourners paid respects at a weekend candlelight vigil at a nearby pond, and others contributed to growing flower memorials at Bush statues at both the library and a park in downtown Houston. Bush's family has not said who will speak at the service.

College Station is the location of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library, where Bush will be laid to rest. An invitation-only funeral service is set for Wednesday at Washington National Cathedral. The number is a reference to Bush's place in the roster of America's presidents.

"It was gracious of him to call", Bush said of Trump, his former rival.

Meanwhile, the City of Houston is honoring George H.W. Bush with a City Hall tribute and is urging people who attend to dress in colorful socks.

"He was just a high-quality man who truly loved his family", Trump said on Saturday while in Argentina for the G20 summit.

He said Bush's "quality of life had deteriorated a lot" in recent months, but that near the end he was able to talk by phone with his adult children, including former President George W. Bush.
