Jose Mourinho won't turn to £52million Fred until Manchester United can defend

The Red Devils have drawn their last two games 2-2 against Arsenal and Southampton and need to bounce back at home to Fulham tomorrow.

José Mourinho admits he can not afford to play Fred, the fourth most expensive player in Manchester United's history, unless his team becomes tighter defensively.

The midfielder, who has not featured in any of United's past four league matches, has lost his place in the Brazil squad after struggling to make an impression at Old Trafford. He has also been an unused replacement in five of the past seven games.

"I think when the team is defensively stronger, the horizons for Fred change completely".

United's goal difference is -1, having allowed 25 goals and scored 24, and Mourinho cited this.

Mourinho did not directly criticise Pogba after the draw against Southampton but made it clear he was unhappy with the performance of his midfield.

"[We are taking it] step by step", Mourinho said when asked about Fred in Friday's media conference. "The spirit and fight is there and we will get there".

"I repeat the position, the points sometimes don't say much about the real potential of the team, one of the two most important managers in the history of the Premier League, so they have the potential to come here tomorrow and to give us a very different match".

Mourinho expects Fulham to provide awkward opposition, even though they have won only twice in the Premier League all season.
