On Wednesday, Fisher was hired as head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks, one of the WNBA's most successful franchises but one far removed. He famously took the job as head coach of the New York Knicks immediately after his retirement.

"I'm excited to be the new head coach of the LA Sparks", Fisher said in a statement. He went 17-65 in his first year as head coach of the Knicks and was sacked the following season after the team's 23-31 record. Their plan to take over the National Basketball Association even included Fisher's former teammate in Oklahoma City, Kevin Durant.

Michael Cooper is a previous former member of the Lakers who also coached the Sparks. News conference is set for Friday. The Sparks defeated the Minnesota Lynx, 75-68, in the first round of the playoffs, then lost to the Washington Mystics, 96-64, in the second round.

Fisher replaces Brian Agler, who resigned last month after four seasons at the helm. "With his wealth of experience as a former player and head coach, I can't think of a better steward for our basketball team moving forward".

Agler was 85-51 with the team and led Los Angeles to a championship in 2016.

Fisher played 13 seasons as the Los Angeles Lakers point guard over two stints from 1996 to 2012.
