"Music shows us that all of it matters - every story within every voice, every note within every song", said the former first lady, looking glam in a sparkling gunmetal pantsuit with a 1970s-esque wrap jacket.

The music business will be partying ahead of the show at celebrations including the pre-Grammy gala hosted by the Recording Academy and Clive Davis, the Family Tree Entertainment music managers pre-Grammy brunch and the Music Is Universal artist showcase hosted by Lucian Grainge.

Starting with Lady Gaga, each woman noted how much music means to them personally.

How does Michelle Obama get anything done with so many people cheering and applauding wherever she goes?

Lopez shared a similar sentiment saying, "Back in the bronx music gave me a reason to dance, from hip-hop to free style pop, soul and salsa, and it kept me moving from the block to the big stages and even bigger screens".

"If there's people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain and the snow and spending their hard earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows, you don't need this right here, I promise you", he added.

Backstage, Lopez told ET's Kevin Frazier that it came from the mind of Keys herself.

"Music is what we all love, music is what it's all about". Music helps us share ourselves.

Another fan, @curtisstephen tweeted, "Alicia Keys just walked us through the history of American popular music with a virtuoso performance that was truly was one of the greatest of all-time on the Grammy stage".

There was nothing really more to say after such an auspicious and inspirational opening. The Grammys, Alicia, will "be about the celebration and the power of music". "Tonight we celebrate the greatness in each other, all of us, through music".

Of course Cardi B stole the show as The Birth of Venus complete with clam shell and pearl belly button but what did you expect from the queen of extreme? There was nothing but euphoria in that room for those ear-splitting moments when no one could speak.

Plus, Alicia is the first female to host the ceremony in over a decade.
