House Speaker Nancy Pelosi seemed to throw shade on the Green New Deal being proposed by progressive congresspeople like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

The Green New Deal also aims to create an economic safety net for "frontline" communities that will be affected by the impacts of climate change and by a radical shift away from fossil fuel use. 'The green dream or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they're for it right?' she said, mocking the democratic socialist's effort.

Later in the morning, Pelosi said she had not seen the proposal.

The Green New Deal resolution unveiled Thursday would provide guidance on the drafting of legislation.

Greg Carlock, Green New Deal director of think tank Data for Progress, said lawmakers who seek middle ground policies that fall short of Green New Deal goals will lose youth support in future elections.

"The public is much more aware of the challenge that we face and that is a good thing", Pelosi, a California Democrat, said.

Ocasio-Cortez called the Green New Deal resolution just "the first step" in identifying those solutions.

"The Green New Deal fully tackles the existential threat posed by climate change by presenting a comprehensive, 10-year plan that is as big as the problem it hopes to solve while creating a new era of shared prosperity", according to a summary of the resolution, according to Reuters.

Florida Rep. Kathy Castor will chair the panel, as Pelosi previously announced, and eight other Democrats will serve on it: Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico and Reps.

Pelosi said Reps. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon, Joe Neguse of Colorado, Donald McEachin of Virginia and Sean Casten of IL will serve on the panel, along with three Californians: Julia Brownley, Jared Huffman and Mike Levin.
