Trump signs AI initiative to ensure American leadership

"AI is something that touches every aspect of people's lives", a senior administration official said on the call.

The plan, called the American AI Initiative, is meant to enhance national and economic security and improve Americans' quality of life. The aim of the new initiative is to boost AI development and funding in the US and also to ensure that America is a leader when it comes to helping shape global artificial intelligence policies.

The Trump administration is going to create the American AI Initiative with an executive order on Monday, according to the New York Times and Reuters.

"We can not sit idly by and presume that our leadership is guaranteed", according to a statement released by White House on Monday. Additionally, the directive will authorize expanded access to government data for researchers to help advance the technologies.

It also says federal agencies will establish guidance to ensure the new technologies are developed in a safe, trustworthy way.

Without naming China explicitly, Trump's order does state that the U.S. "must promote an global environment that supports American AI research and innovation and opens markets for American AI industries, while protecting our technological advantage in AI and protecting our critical AI technologies from acquisition by strategic competitors and adversarial nations".

Trump's EO focuses on maintaining the country's research and development on cutting-edge technology to benefit Americans.

The directive will call for better coordination across government agencies, developing regulatory and ethics rules for the use of artificial intelligence, and require federal departments to track spending on research and development of AI.
