After the success of Black Panther, Marvel Studios is looking at creative talents with the background to tackle diverse characters from their pantheon.
According to THR, Marvel is set on casting a primarily Asian-American and Asian cast for the film, with Wonder Woman 1984 screenwriter Dave Callaham set to write the screenplay. Cretton broke out in 2013 with his drama Short Term 12, which he adapated from his own short film of the same name.

Cretton is now directing "Just Mercy", starring Brie Larson and Michael B. Jordan.

Marvel Studios has reportedly tapped Short Term 12 writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton to helm Shang-Chi, which would be its first superhero movie with as Asian character in the lead.
Shang-Chi is the creation of Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin, who made his debut in 1973. More recently, Shang-Chi has appeared as a member of Heroes for Hire and various iterations of The Avengers.
Shang-Chi appears to be another key player in the next phase of Marvel flicks following the events of Avengers: Endgame.
