In a tragic incident reported exclusively by Vanguard, a 9-year-old male lion at the Zoological Garden of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, claimed the life of a dedicated zookeeper during feeding time.
The victim, identified as Mr Olabode Olawuyi, a seasoned Veterinary Technologist who had overseen the care of the wild cats for over a decade, fell victim to the unexpected attack.
Confirming the unfortunate event, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, issued a statement expressing the institution’s condolences and detailing the incident.
“Mr. Olawuyi had been nurturing these lions since their birth on campus nearly a decade ago. Tragically, the male lion turned on the very caretaker who had diligently tended to them,” stated Olarewaju.
Despite the valiant efforts of the staff present to rescue Mr. Olawuyi, the lion’s aggression resulted in fatal injuries before assistance could be rendered.
Upon learning of the incident, the university’s management, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Adebayo Bamire, promptly halted ongoing activities to assess the situation firsthand.
“Despite immediate medical attention, all efforts to save Mr. Olawuyi’s life proved futile,” remarked Olarewaju. In response to the aggressive lion’s behaviour, the animal was humanely euthanized.
In a gesture of sympathy, the university’s management dispatched a delegation to offer support to Mr Olawuyi’s bereaved family, urging them to find solace in faith during this trying time.
Additionally, the university administration has initiated a thorough investigation to determine the factors contributing to the tragic incident.
This development underscores the inherent risks associated with caring for wild animals and serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures in zoological settings.
