President Tinubu and FCT Minister, Barr Nyesom Wike
SHARE

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted emergency approval to procure digital tracking devices to enhance the fight against kidnapping and violent crimes in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. FCT Minister Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike disclosed this during his first monthly media chat for the year in Abuja on Monday, January 22, 2024, as reported by Postreporters.

Wike acknowledged the inadequate equipment, which led to recent unpleasant events. With the emergency procurement approval by the President, he anticipates a positive change in the security landscape of the FCT. The Minister praised the President’s quick approval, eliminating the delays inherent in the usual procurement process.

The purchase of specialized equipment aims to empower security agencies to precisely track criminals within the city, ultimately reducing criminal activities. Barrister Wike also revealed plans to provide motorcycles to enhance the mobility of security agencies in challenging terrains, aiding them in addressing insecurity in the nation’s capital.

He emphasized the importance of information sharing among security agencies, underscoring its significance in tackling insecurity in the FCT. Wike highlighted recent arrests of informants cooperating and providing valuable intelligence, leading to the apprehension of kidnappers and thwarting potential attacks.

While recognizing the need for stiffer criminal penalties, the Minister stressed that the FCT Administration would continue collaborating with stakeholders to ensure the safety of lives and property. He urged residents to combat insecurity actively and assured ongoing efforts to address crime-related challenges, particularly in boundary areas.

Wike also announced plans to register and paint all commercial vehicles in FCT colors, enhancing security measures and preventing using unregistered cars for commercial purposes. He expressed concerns about the need for vehicle terminals in the FCT. He outlined initiatives, including constructing three terminals, to reduce crime associated with commuters waiting on roads for taxis.

In addition, the Minister called for increased motivation for security operatives and advocated for stiffer penalties as part of a comprehensive strategy to curb criminal activities in the FCT. He affirmed the FCTA’s commitment to supporting security agencies and encouraged residents to cooperate to secure lives and property in the FCT.
